Abstract It was found that the "Rua Direita" is an urban element present in significant numbers on Portuguese cities, towns and villages. The identification of the "Rua Direita" on the mainland shows a wide morphological diversity of the urban element that regardless of the context where it operates continuously demonstrates to be an element holding a key role in the genesis and production of urban fabric.

Recognizing it as the structural element of the "linear simple model," which highlights the sense of space axiality, the basis for the organization and composition of the Portuguese tradition city. It is verified through a direct contact that at present many of the urban elements under study no longer have to them associated the name "Rua Direita", despite the confirmation that they had it at some time interval.

For many and different reasons these same streets throughout the ages have been changing their toponymy consecutively, with the term "Direita" fallen into disuse. The purpose of this paper is to present, from a few different case studies, that this urban element designated by "Rua Direita", despite the unavoidable loss of its nomenclature, is still recognized in today's urban landscape of many mainland Portuguese cities, not only by the confirmation in historical documents, but mainly through its other urban qualities inherent to its concept.
