Ptarmigan lake buena vista co

Our first trail 5 days after arriving from Florida. My husband could have done the whole thing but I got winded and had to turn back before the small lakes. Definitely want to go back once I am acclimated. The trail is amazing, loved seeing the lakes. Although it started to hail on our descend down, but overall the view at the end was beautiful. The wildflowers are starting to fade. The mosquitos were out middle of the day with the sun shining up at Ptarmigan lake.

Trail was easy to navigate but its uphill for the most part going there so take it slow. Which I was surprised! Definitely check this place out :. East access off CR in Buena Vista. Small parking lot.

Found a space at 9a. Hiked to Ptarmigan Lake with seeing multiple ponds. The climbed Jones Mountain to the summit at where we ate lunch.

Absolutely beautiful views of the lake, pond, and surrounding mountains including Harvard, Columbia, Yale, and Princeton. Will be back to climb other 13ers accessible near Ptarmigan Lake. Great trail to take kids on - right amount of intensity with reward winning views at end.

This is a nice hike. Took this trail as a warm up with some flat lander friends. We loved loved it! The two lakes are so nice. Lots of wild flowers by the lakes. Nice forest trail. Easy to navigate. Parking lot is small but we were able to start late and find a place. Enjoyed it. Around the first lake keep going to top to find another lake. I took my kids 9 and 11 up for a backpacking trip and it was great!

Trail in was uphill but doable. Note that about halfway to the lake the trail crosses an unused road and there is a sign that makes it loook like the trail is closed. Take the trail to the right it is very obvious. We ended up camping at the alpine lake below Ptarmigan Lake. Plenty of camp sites, but the trail is heavily used. We camped on the far side of the lake and got a little more privacy that way. Fly fishing was great, but as noted by others, these are finicky fish. Caught most in the alpine lake where we camped on leach patterns or VERY small adams patterns like We even saw a ptarmigan and her chicks up at Ptarmigan lake!

Overall, great trip, well maintained trail, there were some mosquitoes so bring bug spray. Started at and we were one of two cars in the parking lot.

When we got back at 11, the parking lot was full. The trail was super easy to follow. Spent about 30 minutes up at the lake we have a flight to catch LOL This is a must due hike when in the area. We loved seeing so many dogs on the trail too! Use Navigator in the AllTrails app and join the other outdoor explorers who have completed this trail.
